Abstract:

Six mowing treatments produced some notable differences in vegetation in nine years. Summer vs. Fall mowing, mowing every year, every other year or every third year were the six treatments. Summer mowing every year produced a more grassy meadow; the other treatments produced a more goldenrod-dominated meadow.

Description:
Treatment and field methods
Six approximately equal areas of old field at our McDaniels Natural Area were delineated for mowing treatments. Mowing was done using a tractor-mounted brush hog, or large rotary mower. Treatment one was mowed every year in late July or early August. Treatment two was mowed every second year in late July or early August. Treatment three was mowed every third year in late July or early August. Treatment four was mowed every year in late October or November. Treatment five was mowed every second year in late October or November. Treatment six was mowed every third year in late October or November. The mower was set to cut 4 - 6 inches above the soil surface. Two permanent square vegetation plots 2m x 2m were placed in each treatment and sampled in late June or early July every year from 1999 to 2007. Mowing was done every year from 1999 to 2007. Visual percent cover estimates were made for every vascular plant species found in the plots.
