Authors: Abel, John F.; Philpot, William Douglas
Abstract: Prof. Philpot describes his (circuitous) path to research in remote sensing and to joining the faculty in remote sensing in CEE. The discussion turns to the range of research that existed prior to Philpot’s arrival, primarily photogrammetry and airphoto interpretation as applied to a variety of engineering activities along with reminiscences of individual faculty: Don Belcher, Ta Liang and Warren Philipson. The interview closes with a general description of some of Philpot’s research activities.

Title: Forecasting adoption of ultra-low-emission vehicles using Bayes estimates of a multinomial probit model and the GHK simulator
Authors: Daziano, Ricardo; Achtnicht, Martin
Abstract: In this paper we use Bayes estimates of a multinomial probit model with fully flexible substitution patterns to forecast consumer response to ultra-low-emission vehicles. In this empirical application of the probit Gibbs sampler, we use stated-preference data on vehicle choice from a Germany-wide survey of potential light-duty-vehicle buyers using computer-assisted personal interviewing. We show that Bayesian estimation of a multinomial probit model with a full covariance matrix is feasible for this medium-scale problem and provides results that are very similar to maximum simulated likelihood estimates. Using the posterior distribution of the parameters of the vehicle choice model as well as the GHK simulator we derive the choice probabilities of the different alternatives. We first show that the Bayes point estimates of the market shares reproduce the observed values. Then, we define a base scenario of vehicle attributes that aims at representing an average of the current vehicle choice situation in Germany. Consumer response to qualitative changes in the base scenario is subsequently studied. In particular, we analyze the effect of increasing the network of service stations for charging electric vehicles as well as for refueling hydrogen. The result is the posterior distribution of the choice probabilities that represent adoption of the energy-efficient technologies.

Title: Memorial to Richard N. White (1933-2009)
Authors: Cooke, J. Robert (Producer); King, Kenneth M. (Producer); Abel, John F. (Producer)
Abstract: Richard “Dick” N. White, the James A. Friend Family Distinguished Professor of Engineering Emeritus of the School of Civil and Enviromnental Engineering (CEE), died at the age of 75. He was one of Cornell’s most distinguished faculty members for 38 years until his retirement in 1999. Among his numerous appointments and positions at Cornell, he most notably served as Director of the School of CEE (1978-84) and as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs of the College of Engineering (1987-90). He was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1992 and was an Honorary Member of two prominent national civil engineering societies, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). He was particularly active in the latter and served as its President in 1997-98.

He joined the CEE faculty in 1961 and rapidly developed a versatile research program to complement his teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses. Although his research interests spanned all the traditional areas of structural engineering — experimental. analytical and computer approaches to concrete, steel and timber structures — he held a special love for topics in concrete and for structural model studies. In support of the last, he led the creation and use of a structural models lab for both instruction and research that was one of the finest in the nation. Among his many publications, he was the senior author of a remarkably successful set of textbooks, Structural Engineering, a three-volume series that integrated aspects of mechanics, analysis, behavior, materials and design — and also disseminated widely the essence of the Cornell CEE undergraduate curriculum in structures.
