I am an artist and technologist, and my research has explored how humanism can offer new directions for technological development. This has resulted in works that I've called edgy products, different from mass-market products in that they highlight social and cultural trends, and embody values not usually represented in technologies. Edgy products can be devices for politics or peace, mechanisms to incite labor unrest, or systems to counter dangerous trends in government. These are art pieces, but they function not only as sculptures or media objects, but also as exemplars for how our culture could differently envision its material artifacts.
