A four-month-old Arabian colt presented to Cornell University Hospital for Animals Large Animal Emergency Service for evaluation of facial trauma. The foal was seen galloping into a fence post earlier in the day. He was given dexamethasone and Banamine by the local veterinarian and referred to Cornell. On presentation, the foal had swelling, subcutaneous emphysema, and crepitus over the nose. He also had bilateral epistaxis, a shoulder laceration, superficial corneal abrasion, and prolonged capillary refill time. An intravenous catheter was placed and a tracheostomy was performed. The foal was started on Amikacin, Potassium Penicillin, Banamine, Omeprazole, Sucralfate, and Neopolybac ointment. CT scan of the foal's skull revealed comminuted fractures of the maxilla and nasal bones. The foal was taken to surgery, where the bone fragments were reconstructed and stabilized with 20 gauge inter-fragmentary wires. The foal had an uneventful recovery and a cosmetic result.
