Hormone Treatments and the Risk of Breast Cancer Fact Sheet No. 40

Abstract

Three recent clinical trials have changed the way postmenopausal hormone treatment is viewed. One of the trials was ended because of increases in breast cancer risk related to the treatment. Further, the decrease in the risk of heart and blood vessel disease, that was expected, was not found in any of these trials. Major health organizations have responded and suggested that use of this type of therapy be discontinued for health promotion and most disease prevention purposes. The decision to use birth control pills is difficult. Use of birth control pills has been associated with a small increase in breast cancer risk during the time that the pills are taken. Birth control pills also have other potential risks and benefits, beyond preventing pregnancy.
