In 1999 I gave a paper in the French Senate titled Words Around Objects: The Metaphors of New Media. It has become the context for the way that I think about my work. The idea is simple. It is that objects, especially sculptural ones carry various layers of meaning and description. One might think of them as filters or skins of the intent of the artist. Its a bit mysterious as to how they are there, but there they are. First there are aesthetic filters, then, perhaps, there are political filters, or descriptive filters. There are historical layers, psychological ramifications and theoretical positions.
